Why the pictures matter more than the day
You spend months organising an event for a few hundred people. The photographs are how it reaches the thousands who were not there: the write-up, the newsletter, next year's invitation, the case study, the wall in reception. An event that was not photographed properly happened once. One that was keeps working.
How I work a room
Quietly. I move around the edges, I do not stand in front of the speaker, and I do not ask people to hold a moment while I get set. Event photography is closer to reportage than to portraiture: the job is to see it coming and be in the right place, not to arrange it after the fact.
The exception is the group shots. Every event needs a few, and they are much easier when somebody has decided in advance who is in them. Send me the list and I will round people up before they disappear to the bar.
Cambridge venues, and their lighting
Much of this work is in college halls, and college halls are dark, uneven, and full of mixed light sources that fight each other. It is the reason people book somebody who has done it before. I have photographed Christmas parties, anniversaries and dinners in those rooms for years, and I know when available light will carry a frame and when it needs help.
Turnaround
Every frame is edited individually and delivered to a private online gallery with free high-resolution downloads. If your communications team needs images the same night, say so when you book and I will get a first selection to you while the event is still running.
Common questions
What does event photography cost?
A half day of 4 hours is £480 and a full day of 8 hours is £880. Shorter coverage is £180 for the first hour and £100 for each hour after. Editing and gallery delivery are included.
Can you work in a dark college hall?
Yes. Cambridge college dining halls, marquees and hotel ballrooms are some of the hardest lighting there is, and they are most of what I photograph. I work in available light where it holds up and add discreet fill where it does not.
Will you make people pose?
Only when you want a set of posed group shots, which most events need a few of. The rest is candid: the speaker mid-sentence, the room laughing, the conversation in the corner that turned into a deal.
How soon can we post pictures on social media?
Tell me if you need same-night images and I will edit a first selection during or straight after the event so your comms team has something to publish while people are still in the room.
Do you cover conferences over several days?
Yes. Multi-day conferences, retreats and roadshows across several sites are normal work. Each additional day is charged at the day rate.
